On Saturday 7th March nearly 20 of us gathered in St Andrews Church to discuss Timothy Keller’s book The Prodigal God. The book looked at the parable of the prodigal son from Luke’s gospel and challenged us to think of all the characters in the story – especially focusing on the elder brother.
In recent weeks we have been in the midst of various storms, bringing strong winds and a large amount of rain. As I look around the garden, I am surprised at what has fallen victim to the wind and what has survived. Often, a somewhat weak looking item has survived, where what appears to be a more substantial structure may have succumb to the storms.
As we enter into the season of Lent I wonder what you are doing to mark this time? Giving something up – allowing more time to read and think? Perhaps giving yourself space to think what does it mean to lead the abundant life that Jesus said he came to give (John 10:10) – I wonder what are the things, behaviours, attitudes and habits that get in the way? What is it that holds me back from living that abundant life? Are there things that I need to let go of – are there parts of my life I need to bring before God in prayers throughout Lent and allow God to speak to me - to guide me - to correct me.
